Vol. 20 No. 1 (2025): Italian Theatre in the 21st Century (Special Issue)
Published: 2025-12-03
The special thematic issue of the 20th volume of the journal Parabasis, edited by Elina Daraklitsa, Assistant Professor at the Department of Theater Studies NKUA, brings together ten scholarly contributions that investigate the diverse dimensions of Italian theatre in the twenty-first century, illuminating its dynamic interplay between enduring theatrical traditions and contemporary modes of artistic innovation. From Romeo Castellucci’s provocative vision of the sacred and the grotesque, and the directorial legacy of Giorgio Strehler and Lluís Pasqual, to the post-pandemic redefinition of theatrical presence in an «onlife» world, the contributions map a vibrant theatrical landscape in constant dialogue with society, technology, and the environment. The topics range from the intersections between theatre and the environmental humanities to Virgilio Sieni’s civic choreographies, the virtual reimaginings of Pirandello’s drama, and the feminist satire of Dario Fo and Franca Rame. Together, these essays reveal Italian theatre as a living crossroads of art, thought, and emotion an ever-evolving space where memory encounters innovation and the boundaries between the real and the imagined are constantly redrawn.
The fields covered by this thematic tribute are: a. dramaturgy and theatrical repertoire, b. stage and directing trends, c. theatre and digital technologies, d. theatre, ecology and nature, e. contemporary reinterpretations of classical plays, f. theatre, society, and politics, g. theatre and gender studies, h. opera theatre, i. street theatre, j. theatre and dance.
In addition to the contributions in the special thematic section, volume 20 includes (in the section: Studies) seventeen (17) other articles on independent topics, covering various fields of the history and theory of Greek and world theater, (in the section: Miscellanea) three (3) articles on more specific topics, (in the section: Book Reviews) three (3) book reviews, and (in the section: Doctoral Dissertations) the summaries of doctoral dissertations completed at the Department of Theater Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during the period between the publication of the previous volume and the publication of the present volume.
