Abstract

This article seeks to foreground the scholarly merits of Walter Puchner’s published study The Theatre of Dimitris Dimitriadis: An Essay on Theatrical Postmodernism (Nefeli Publishing, «Theatre: Art—Society—Politics» series, 2023, 620 pages), by offering a brief yet concise retrospective of the research conducted on the Greek dramaturg’s theatrical work—whom Puchner sketches as «the most prolific figure in contemporary literary and theatrical history, second only to Iakovos Kambanellis». As a culmination of the critical research into Dimitriadis’ work since the 1990s, Puchner’s volume definitively dispels the long-standing perception of the dramaturg as an “outsider,” firmly establishing him as a leading playwright. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive account of his body of theatre work, encompassing more than sixty published plays as well as a significant number of unpublished texts, extending through to 2019.

Dimitra Kondylaki

Dimitra Kondylaki is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in «Intercultural Communication and Mediation». She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Sorbonne University and is also a dramaturg and translator. She studied Communication & Mass Media at Panteion University (1991-1995), and theatre and comparative literature in Paris on an I.K.Y. scholarship (State Scholarships Foundation). She also holds a Master’s degree (D.E.A.) from the Institute of Theatrical Studies in Paris (Censier Paris III, 1997). Her PhD, supervised by Professor Denis Guénoun (PARIS IV-Sorbonne, 2003), focused on theatre publishing in Greece and France during the years 1980-2000 and its contribution to the emergence of a new "theatre of the word" (théâtre de parole). Since 2004, she has taught creative writing, translation, intercultural communication, theatre history, and dramaturgy in the Theatre Studies Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the University of Patras, and the University of Peloponnese. Since 2017, she has also taught in the Postgraduate Programs of the NKUA Theatre Studies Department and the Hellenic Open University (MSc in "Creative Writing"). She directed the Theatre Translation Workshop at the French Institute of Greece (2009-2020). She served as Artistic Consultant and Head of Publications at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival (2016-2025). A member of the Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques and the International Centre for Theatrical Translation - Maison Antoine Vitez (Paris), she has collaborated with international cultural organizations and festivals (Odéon - Théâtre de l’Europe, Atelier Européen de la Traduction - Scène Nationale d’Orléans, International Theatre Institute, etc.). She has translated leading writers (Michel Vinaver, Jean Genet, Eugène Ionesco, Alfred de Musset, Georges Feydeau, Maurice Maeterlinck, Marina Tsvetaeva, etc.). Her theoretical articles on contemporary literature, translation, and theatre have been published in Greece and abroad, garnering a significant number of heteroreferences (citations). She has authored the monographs: The Theatrical Dimitris Dimitriadis: Exploring the Possibility of the Unexpected (Nominated for Best Theatrological Publication by the Association of Greek Theatre and Music Critics, Nefeli 2016); The Language of Contemporary Theatre on the Horizon of Literature (Nefeli 2023).
