Abstract

The performances of the Αncient Greek Drama in the modern era are in fact a «partnership» of different, autonomous performing arts, through which the Ancient Drama is revived and reconstructed. In the context of multi-factorial performances, with clear specializations for music, dance, text, direction, set design, costumes, etc., the space-time is almost always intertwined with an incongruity with respect to time authorship of the work, its plot and the composer himself.  The historical review of the most important ideological trends by directors, composers, art & music critics for the interpretation of Ancient Drama in the 20th century, reveal the ideological divergences and convergences regarding the role of music in revived ancient dramas in relation to tradition (folk song and byzantine chant) and its connection with antiquity. Cases study are the «expanded» music by Yiannis Christou for Aeschylus' Persians (directed by Koun, 1965), and the electro-acoustic music by Konstantinos Veta for Euripides’ Iphigeneia in Aulis (directed by Moumoulidis, 2012), about which the author lays down new interpretative tools for the analysis of stage music in revived ancient dramas.  The paper is based on archival and ethnographic research (in situ and with interviews of contributors) and on the interdisciplinary approach of music from the disciplines of (ethno)musicology, archaeo-musicology, theatrology.

Renata Dalianoudi

Renata Dalianoudi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Audio and Visual Arts at the Ionian University, a Professor-Advisor at the Hellenic Open University (undergraduate program «Hellenic Culture» and postgraduate program «Performing Arts»), and the Scientific Director of the Institute of Greek Music Heritage (IEMK). She is a producer of radio and television documentaries (for ERT, SKAI, COSMOTE HISTORY, Pemptousia TV). She was a radio producer at ERA Third Programme (ERT) with a show titled «Rare Musics from World Cinema and Theatre». She is a research associate and producer at ERT Kerkyra (Corfu) with an archive show titled «Peri Mousikis o Logos» (Talking about Music). She studied Musicology at the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the same University and the University of Vienna. As a scholar of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) and the A. Papadakis Legacy of NKUA, she completed her doctoral dissertation: Manos Hatzidakis and the Greek Folk Music Tradition. She attended courses in Ethnomusicology and Folklore at the University of Vienna and Theatre Studies at NKUA. She also studied piano, church organ, accordion, guitar, and ballet. She was trained in Folk dances and Argentine tango. She has authored 4 monographs: on M. Hatzidakis, Folk Instruments in Eastern and Western Crete, and Music and Dance in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, the Aegean, and Corinth.  Selected Works: 75 articles and conference presentations; 4 entries in world encyclopedias; 50 documentaries on the «History of Greek Music» (SKAI); 2 documentaries on the «Epirot Lament» (ERT 2); 195 broadcasts on music in theatre and cinema (ERA 3); 25 television ethnographic documentaries «Musicking» (Pemptousia TV).

She is a Visiting Professor at the following Universities: Sorbonne Nouvelle/Paris III (France), Universidad Polytecnico de Leiria (Portugal), Universidad de Barcelona (Spain), Universitaet des Saarlandes (Germany), Université de Strasbourg (France), Arctic University in Norway (Norway). She is a member of the Academic Council of Cultural Diplomacy and a scientific delegate of the National Commission for UNESCO. The fifty documentaries “The History of Greek Music from Antiquity to Today” are offered with free access to 13 domestic university departments. During her studies, she received 31 scholarships from: a) IKY (State Scholarships Foundation), b) NKUA, c) Foundation for Research and Technology, d) Athens Conservatoire, e) National Conservatoire. She speaks English, French, German (C2) and Italian, Spanish (A2).
