Susan Bassnett, Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Glasgow
Susan Bassnett is Professor of Comparative Literature at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Glasgow and Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature in the Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Warwick, which she founded in the 1980s. She also served as Pro-Vice- Chancellor at the University twice and is currently Special Advisor in Translation Studies. In 2016, Bassnett was elected President of the British Contemporary Literature Association. She is the author of over 20 books; her Translation Studies, which first appeared in 1980, has remained in print ever since and has become an important international textbook in this field. She has also edited several volumes, such as The Translator as Writer (2006, with Peter Bush) and, most recently, Translation and World Literature (2017). A 2002 collection, Exchanging Lives: Poems and Translations (2002) includes creative translations from Alejandra Pizarnik. Her most recent monograph is Translation (in the New Critical Idiom series, 2013).
