Abstract

The introduction of film in education, both as a tool used in teaching other subjects and as a standalone subject, faces challenges, several of which can be met with a solid theoretical framework that will guide its initial design. Such a framework could enable substantiated approaches in the choices made when designing film-based activities; as a result, it would also better support teachers’ confidence with regard to the use of such activities in real classrooms, as well as lead to the creation of educational material that is more efficient with regard to its educational goals and also more easily accepted by students. Consequently, supporting teachers is considered a key parameter in this design as it is expected to also improve the overall experience of teaching and learning. The theory of multimedia learning includes features that are compatible with the use of film in education; for that reason, it can offer several essential principles for creating educational activities that could improve both the desired learning objectives and the positive experience of both teachers and students.
