Abstract
The main problem in works of art, which have been restored in the past and need further conservation work, is the unknown nature of the conservation materials used. This article gives a detailed presentation of the methodology used to examine earlier conservation work on a Byzantine icon, using spectroscopic and physico-chemical, non-destructive methods, and describes the problems encountered in re-conserving this artefact. Knowledge of the conservation materials used in the past was necessary in order to restore and stabilize the object, implementing conservation guidelines regarding the use of compatible and completely reversible materials. Special attention is paid to evaluating the results of the analytical methods of examination used, and to understanding the technical characteristics of the conservation materials, so that they can be used successfully on the work, thus contributing to its sustainability.
