Abstract
The setting up of the archive of the Agrinio-born photographer George Rizos (1938-2008), a large part of which has been held since the 1970s in the Benaki Museum’s Photographic Archives and on the premises of the Historical and Archaeological Society of Western Central Greece, began in 1968 at the instigation of Thomas Bokoros, President of the Society, an institution which aims to showcase the cultural capital of Aitoloakarnania. These two archives contain a vast number of photographs of the archaeological, Byzantine and later monuments in the Aitoloakarnania prefecture. The Benaki Museum holds 1,984 digital photographs of the Byzantine monuments in the area, while the Society’s archive has preserved 372 black-and-white photographs of monuments from all periods. Opening up this hitherto unknown archive relating to Aitoloakarnania to the public reveals the rich heritage of an important region in Greece and records the state of the monuments at the point when they and their surroundings were photographically documented.
