Abstract

This article explores the concept of "moral suffering" (ethiki odyni) within the context of the dominant contemporary techno-economic structure. The author argues that our era is defined by a metaphysical infrastructure where technical automation and economic factors have replaced the sacred symbolism of the medieval world and the human-centric ideals of the Enlightenment. The study examines how this structure creates a new form of distress—not merely physical pain (algos) or psychological grief (psychiki odyni), but a specific moral suffering resulting from the instrumentalization of human life and the erosion of traditional ethical values. Couloubaritsis suggests that the globalization of technical and economic systems necessitates the emergence of a "new humanism" that can regulate these forces and prioritize human dignity over efficiency and profit.
