Abstract

This article explores the intellectual legacy of the Greek philosopher Kostas Papaioannou, positioning him as a seminal figure in anthropological and critical thought. The author examines Papaioannou’s profound restructuring of the relationship between man, culture, and society, heavily influenced by 19th-century thinkers like Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard. Through a detailed analysis of his works—specifically The Man and His Shadow and Marx and Marxism—the study highlights his critique of modern civilization's "dehumanization" and his rejection of the deterministic "social monism" found in historical materialism. Furthermore, the paper traces Papaioannou’s influence on subsequent thinkers like Foucault and Castoriadis, emphasizing his "historical-critical ontology" as a meaningful response to biopolitical power. Ultimately, Lazou argues that Papaioannou’s synthesis of ancient Greek balance and modern critical tools offers a vital foundation for the active role of philosophy in the 21st century.
