Brief Hegelian Observations on Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

Abstract

This article presents a brief Hegelian commentary on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Contrary to the stereotypical opposition between G.W.F. Hegel and Wittgenstein, the author first highlights central points of convergence between Tractarian and speculative philosophy. These similarities are primarily located in the shared project of clarifying concepts and "curing" philosophy of various ontological fixations. The focus then shifts to the primary point of divergence: the radically different interpretations of the logical act of negation. While this act leads Wittgenstein to the limit of silence, it leads Hegel toward further philosophical discourse. The paper places special emphasis on the ethical and practical implications of these differing interpretations of negation. Through this comparison, the author attempts to demonstrate that the systematic relationship between Hegelian and Wittgensteinian philosophy is more nuanced than traditionally assumed, particularly regarding the limits of language and sense.
