An Interpretative Misleading of the Term "Moral Reasoning"

Ζαχαρούλα Θεοδώρου
Abstract

This article examines the concept of "moral reasoning" and addresses the common linguistic and conceptual pitfalls associated with its translation into Greek. The author argues that the cognitive processes underlying moral deliberation are essential for understanding moral judgments regarding right and wrong. The study highlights that transitions between stages of thought are crucial for assessing moral development, drawing heavily on the cognitive-developmental frameworks of Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg. A central focus of the paper is the technical process of translation; the author asserts that failing to adhere to specific linguistic rules often leads to a distorted rendering of the term in Greek, which in turn affects the psychological and philosophical interpretation of the concept. The study concludes by proposing a more accurate Greek rendering that preserves the original intent of "moral reasoning," ensuring that the transitions in moral thinking are correctly represented in educational and psychological contexts.
