Abstract

In Religious Education (RE), it is not possible to talk about the role of religion today without addressing the concept of secularization. Using an explorative methodology, this article explores the potential of approaching key topics in RE, in this case secularization, with a narrative approach. The article presents four narratives of secularization and explores their possible implications based on research literature on RE.

Marlene Printz Jellesen is Associate Professor at the Department of Teacher Education, University College Nordjylland North Jutland, Aalborg, Denmark. She has taught the subjects “Religion/Knowledge of Christianity” and “Religion, Ethics/Philosophy, and Citizenship” since 2002. Currently, she is working on a PhD thesis on “Participation opportunities in the subject Knowledge of Christianity (kristendomskundskab)” in the Danish primary school at Aalborg University, Denmark. She has a master's degree in theology and a master's degree in pedagogy and citizenship.
