THE PRINTING OFFICE AND “LABOUR PUBLISHING HOUSE TO ASTRO” (THE STAR) THE PUBLISHING ACTIVITY (1927-1931) OF THE FIRST CYPRIOT POLITICAL PARTY PRINTING OFFICE
Abstract
This paper presents unknown facts and data about the history and the publishing activity of the “Labour publishing house To Astro”. This printing office printed the newspaper Neos Anthropos (New Man) of the Cyprus Communist Party (CCP) for a period of time, and practically operated as the “party’s printing office” from March 1927 until October 1931. In the ten months of its activity in 1931 as publishing house, under the guidance of Ch. Vatis and direction of K. Skeleas, it published 24 books. These publications –which in their majority were not documented in the Cypriot bibliography– are very significant literarily and historically, and change our knowledge concerning the battle of ideas in Cyprus during the last months before the October Riots of 1931. The publications shed light on the history of the communist movement in Cyprus and brings about new valuable information on the two pioneers of the years 1926-1931, Skeleas and Vatis.
