The prohibition by the government of the mass rally at Syntagma Square on December 3, 1944 Η απαγόρευση του συλλαλητηρίου στο Σύνταγμα
Abstract
The author examines the reasons for the prohibition of the formerly authorised mass rally of EAM at Constitution Square in Athens on December 3, 1944: the resignation of the ministers of the Left from the Papandreou government on Friday December 2, the designation of such an act by the Prime Minister as a "sedition" and the authorisation of the police forces to use their arms, which resulted in the assassination of 21 unarmed demonstrators, are questioned. The increasingly hostile attitude of the British
government since fall 1943 towards the growing forces of EAM and ELAS and the agreement in October 1944 in Moscow between Stalin and Churchill as to the British control over Greece after the war are discussed in relationship to the events mentioned above.
