Abstract
Although the history of science as a new professional discipline is not emerging before 1950, and initially only in the United States, the National University of Greece has taken the initiative of devoting a chair to the field at 1924. Michael Stephanides who was teaching history of chemistry from 1910 as a lecturer at the University of Athens is the first professor of the hair. In order to investigate this innovation we have studied in detail the judgments and the arguments of the Greek scientific community who decided for this professorship. Attempts also to set the new discipline in a cultural context enhance understanding both of its development and of its emergence as a new discipline at the University of Athens.
