Abstract

Marianna Karali, Greek 19th Century Photographic Portraiture and Professional Photography

This publication is based on my graduate thesis “The person in the picture: The Urban Portrait photography in Greece in the 19th century” and investigates the origins, the development and the dissemination of photographic portrait in the Greek society of the 19th century. The document is structured in five distinct sections that examine sequentially: the advent of both the photographic profession and portraiture in Greece in the period 1839-1856, the prime of Greek photography from 1856 to 1880, as depicted in the two main cities of Greece at that time, Athens and Hermoupolis-Syros, the structure and types of photography-related businesses, complementary themes, such as the activity of women in the field of photography and the impact of the portrait photography in the urban layer of the Greek society, as well as the integration of portraiture with the wider, urban-like ideology of the 19th century.
