The Transformation of Reading Response in the Reception of Electronically Mediated Literary Works

This study explores the transformation of reading response in the reception of electronically mediated literary works. It examines the evolving field of electronic literature, highlighting its fluid and hybrid nature that defies fixed taxonomies while reshaping traditional literary forms. By analyzing key categories such as hypertext fiction, digital poetry, interactive narratives, and social media-based works, the article emphasizes the significance of medium-specific features in shaping interpretation. Central to this process is the reconceptualization of the reader’s role: no longer a passive recipient, the digital reader becomes an active navigator, performer, and “techno-flâneur,” whose embodied and multisensory engagement with digital texts redefines reading as an interactive and participatory experience. The study further discusses the impact of interactivity, embodiment, and participatory culture, stressing the necessity of archival preservation given the ephemeral nature of digital works. Ultimately, electronic literature is presented as a liminal and transformative domain that challenges established literary canons and invites a reconsideration of textuality in the digital age.
