Cultural mobility and world literature

In the context of today’s intensifying global crises, what might the position of comparative literature be within the new emerging republic of letters in the second quarter of the 21st century? In an attempt to answer this question, the speech at the workshop on 7 November explored the concepts of ‘cultural mobility’ and ‘global literature’. The focus on cultural mobility is based on the view that there is no such thing as patriotic art or science, as Goethe famously said. Similarly, the ‘global’ in ‘global literature’ merely provides a framework to describe the transcultural, transspatial and transtemporal entanglements through which literature is constituted as a social practice.
