Abstract
This paper attempts to describe the political choices that influenced higher education policies in Europe; the United States; and other economically developed countries through the past decades as well as to point on their consequences for maintaining or not discriminations that are often transferred to higher education from other social fields. In support of what is argued, data on the Greek case are presented, while for contributing to the mitigation of discrimination in higher education some specific proposals are outlined by the authors.
