WHAT KIND OF GEOMETRIC KNOWLEDGE DO THE IMAGES PROMOTE IN GEOMETRY TEXTBOOKS FROM 1975 UNTIL TODAY?
Abstract
Τhe current study investigates the role and the use of images in the Greek geometry textbooks of Lyceum (Upper high-school) from 1975 to date. Our aim is to examine how geometry concepts are introduced to students in texts through three types of images and to investigate whether authors’ priorities have changed. The results have shown that there is a dominant category, which has been used most from the authors; nevertheless, its use declines over time. We draw on Chevallard’s anthropological theory of the didactic (ATD) in order to conclude that over time Greek geometry textbooks put less emphasis on the mathematical proof. We linked this finding to the wider socio-cultural context of educational reformations in Greece.
