THE FACTORS OF MATHEMATICS ANXIETY: GENDER DIFFERENCES
Abstract
This study, conducted through semi-structured interviews with 12 secondary school students, highlights the crucial role of sociocultural factors of math anxiety, with a clear focus on gender differences. Our findings underscore that parental and peer attitudes, as well as the school environment, are significant sources of anxiety. Notably, for girls, these factors carry greater weight. Gender stereotypes, which often imply that mathematics is a "male" domain, appear to intensify anxiety in girls, negatively impacting their relationship with the subject. Despite this, the research revealed an encouraging trend: many students challenge these stereotypes, emphasizing the importance of personal effort regardless of gender. This suggests the need for educational strategies that promote a supportive and stereotype-free learning environment.
