Education in the Dodecanese during the Italian occupation, the Royal Technical Schools of Leros & the ghosts in the lake (lago)
Abstract
This paper deals with education in the Dodecanese during the period of Italian rule and its effects on society. Through a historical review, the policy of the Italian conquerors regarding the construction of school infrastructure and the implementation of educational programs aimed at the moral and professional education of young people is examined. Special emphasis is placed on the Royal Technical Schools of Leros, which aimed at the professional training and moral reformation of students through strict discipline and daily activities. The study also analyzes the social and economic dimension of education, highlighting how Technical Schools contributed to the development of the local and national economy. In addition, the paper examines the consequences of political amnesia and the preservation of ideological stereotypes in the historical memory of the inhabitants, as well as the polyphonic testimonies that highlight the contradictions and contrasts of this period.
