Περίληψη
Το άρθρο αυτό έχει δύο στόχους: Πρώτον, συνοψίζει την θεωρία που αφορά στη σχέση ανάμεσα στο συναίσθημα, την εστιαζόμενη στον εαυτό προσοχή και τη ρύθμιση της συμπεριφοράς, τόσο με τυπικούς όσο και με ψυχοπαθολογικούς πληθυσμούς, και εξάγει συμπεράσματα για το πού βρίσκεται αυτός το τομέας έρευνας σήμερα. Δεύτερον, το άρθρο παρουσιάζει κάποια νέα ευρήματα που στοχεύουν στην περεταίρω διαλεύκανση αυτής της σχέσης. Όπως δείχνει η βιβλιογραφία, κατά τη διαδικασία επίτευξης στόχων, το άτομο συγκρίνει τον εαυτό του με πρότυπα και προβαίνει είτε σε διορθώσεις στη συμπεριφορά του είτε σε αλλαγή στόχου. Κατά τη διάρκεια της αυτόαξιολόγησης, η οποία είναι απαραίτητη για τη ρύθμιση της συμπεριφοράς, η προσοχή είναι εστιασμένη στον εαυτό και μπορεί να σχετίζεται είτε με θετικά είτε με αρνητικά συναισθήματα ανάλογα με την υποκειμενική αντίληψη για την πιθανότητα επίτευξης του στόχου. Στις περιπτώσεις ψυχοπαθολογίας η διαδικασία αυτή φαίνεται ότι δυσλειτουργεί και το άτομο παγιδεύεται σε ένα φαύλο κύκλο αρνητικού συναισθήματος και εστιαζόμενης στον εαυτό προσοχής. Τα υπάρχοντα ερευνητικά δεδομένα δείχνουν ότι συγκεκριμένα συναισθήματα ή συναισθηματικές διαστάσεις τείνουν να αυξάνουν την προσοχή προς τον εαυτό, αν και δεν υπάρχει ακόμα συμφωνία για τις συγκεκριμένες διαστάσεις που βρίσκονται πίσω από το μηχανισμό αυτό. Τα ευρήματα που παρουσιάζουμε στοχεύουν στο να διαχωρίσουν τις επιπτώσεις στην εστιαζόμενη στον εαυτό προσοχή των διαστάσεων του σθένους, διέγερσης και ελέγχου, οι οποίες χαρακτηρίζουν όλες τις συναισθηματικές εμπειρίες.
