Abstract
Launching from the basic imperatives of genetic criticism regarding the author’s library, the article focuses on the study of the material traces of writing in the manuscripts of Dionysios Solomos’ The Free Besieged, aiming, on the one hand, to examine the relevance of Solomos’ ars excerpendi with the reconstruction of his virtual library and, on the other, to detect and record the obvious or latent French notes-citations found in the manuscripts, through which Solomos’ multilingualism as a reader-copyist is also manifested. After briefly discussing some basic issues concerning the author’s virtual library in general and its genetic implications, and clarifying the basic terminology, the article proceeds to issues of reconstructing Solomos’ virtual library; the necessity of such a process is stressed in order to reveal the interaction and the creative dialogue between the book material of reading and the process of writing in the manuscripts. Subsequently, an attempt is made to systematise the basic documents concerning the de facto multilingual ars excerpendi of Solomos. Finally, previous identifications of the French notes-citations are reviewed and new ones are presented, followed by a comprehensive presentation of the historical and bibliographical information concerning the printed sources from which these notes-citations are drawn, as well as a brief biographical note of their authors. The entire material is brought together in a functional appendix attached.
