Standardization and psychometric properties of the revised Metacognitive Awareness Reading Strategies Inventory MARSI-2fR
Abstract
The present research aims to adapt, standardize, and psychometrically evaluate the self-reported Metacognitive Awareness Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) scale to give its revised short version (MARSI-2fR) a helpful structure. This flexible psychometric tool, whose interpretation is based on the features of the Greek educational system, aims to assess the metacognitive awareness of reading strategies by Greek and Greek-speaking secondary school students. Adaptation and standardization of the scale included investigation of translational content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and psychometric testing to assess reliability and validity. The weighting of the scale yielded a shorter valid, reliable and evaluable two-factor structure of text-based reading strategies (textor) and extra-textual reading strategies (textout). These factors are interpreted concerning the Greek education system. Finally, instructions are provided for grading the scale.
