Teachers' perceptions of professional quality of life: The predictive role of motivation

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the professional quality of life based on teachers' perceptions and its relationship with their motivation regarding teaching. 389 primary and secondary education teachers from the broader area of Attica participated in the survey. Data were collected electronically (snowball method) using the Quality of Professional Life Scale and the Autonomous Motivation for Teaching Scale. The results showed that teachers adopt a more autonomous, internal motivation while reporting a relatively high level of compassion satisfaction and a low level of burnout and secondary trauma that constitute the dimensions of professional quality of life. The most significant difference, in terms of demographics, was found in relation to gender since female teachers had statistically significantly higher mean scores in almost all the survey factors. Finally, the most important predictive role emerged for intrinsic motivation in relation to compassion fatigue. Findings are discussed in relation to current literature.
