Vita icon of Saint Nicholas by the hand of Nikolaos Kalbos

Abstract
The icon of Saint Nikolaos with twelve life scenes was painted in 1674 by the priest Nikolaos Kalbos. It was a dedication of Nikolaos Sagkinatsos, who is depicted on the bottom praying to the saint. Both the painter and the donor came from prominent families of Crete, the Kalbos family of Chania and the Sagkinatsos family of Rethymnon. Members of these families can be found in Zante in the 17th century, where Nikolaos Kalbos is also mentioned as a teacher of the art of icon painting in 1687. The iconography and the composition of the icon connect it to older icons by Cretan painters. They show an experienced master who handled with ease the theological sources and iconographic models that he was acquainted with.
