Abstract

The tower of Pityos is in the northeastern Chios. It had an important strategic position in the fortification network, because it supervised both rural and military positions. Pityos was castellanus headquarters and had the monopoly of the pitch produced by terebinthus, which was used as a waterproofing material for ships and roofs. Three construction phases can be identified, dated back to late byzantine era until early 16th period
