Abstract

The paper traces the evolution of understanding about a hitherto unexplored aspect of urban life through the archaeology associated with the restoration of medieval
buildings in the walled town of Rhodes. The discovery of toilets in the town’s fortifications was complemented by similar finds in Hospitaller public buildings within the walls. This led to the review of accessible literature and documents related to the subject, and to the formulation of questions about local practices and experience linked to the broader issue of urban health and orderliness.
