Abstract

Excavations at the urban centre of modern Patras yielded lamps of the early Byzantine period, which, on the basis of typology and decoration, fall into two broad categories, the Attic and the North African type. These lamps were either imported from pottery workshops of Corinth, as a result of the tight commercial relations with the capital of the province of Achaea, or fabricated in local workshops. The ones attributed to local production, combined with moulds of the Broneer XXVIII and XXXI type, uncovered from workshops context, suggest that at Patras was developed some regional production during the period under consideration.
