Abstract
Τhe imposing icon of the «Protomartyr» St. Stephen measures 96,8×63,8 cm and is embedded into the south wall of the homonymous chapel which still exists in the complex of the Sinai Monastery. St. Stephen is depicted in frontal pose in a deacon’s attire swinging a censer with his right hand and holding a «pyxis» with his left hand veiled with a very long «mandylion» decorated with crosses. St. Stephen’s icon has many iconographic and stylistic affinities with some Sinai icons of the early 13th century that allow dating in the same period and possibly attribution to the same workshop that created the vita icon of St. George.
