Abstract
This paper discusses the gold-plated human-shaped reliquary, in which the Despot of Mystras, Thomas Palaiologos, offered to Pope Pius II the Skull of the Apostle Andrew in 1462. As a piece of metalwork and in terms of religious practice, as well as style, this reliquary falls within the western cult tradition. A careful examination of its features suggests that it dates in the middle of the 15th century and represents a conservative artistic trend of the Late Gothic period. We argue that the Dalmatian town of Ragusa, a stop-over on the Despot’s journey to Italy, is the most probable place for its manufacture.
