Abstract
In the old katholikon of the Archangel Michael Roukouniotis Monastery on Symi a depiction of a lifesize templon has been preserved, forming an extension to the carved wooden screen. It is an interesting combination, not only because it is one of a kind, but because it is an ingenious solution to the monastery’s need to acquire a templon worthy of its history, and perhaps satisfies some further theological preoccupations of the time. The programme is thought to have been undertaken in the early seventeenth century by a team of Cretan painters, perhaps led by Stylianos Yenites and Antonios Bonis, who created other works for this monastery.
