Abstract
The iconographic theme of the abbot, who leaves his monastery, depicted in the narthex of the monastery church in Dragalevci, Bulgaria, is examined on the basis of the function of the narthex as a place for the penitents. This depiction of the abbot leaving his monastery fits also to the narthex iconographic program due to its instructive nature and further examples with a similar message are sought, also in written sources.
