Crossroads of power: the landholdings of a Vlach nun in 13th-century Thessaly

Abstract
A chrysobull issued by Andronikos II Palaiologos in 1289 secures the privileges of the sebastokratorissa and Vlach nun Hypomone’s monastic foundation Panagia Eleousa in Phanari, Karditsa. The chrysobull provides an opportunity to reconsider the monastic and communal networks of the 13th century. This study maps the villages and estates that emerge from the document to record the boundaries of Hypomone’s power and the Vlach presence in Thessaly.
