Abstract

In the church of Omorfi Ekklesia on Aegina in the depiction of the Entombment a domed structure with lamps being suspended between its intercolumnar spaces dominates the background. The building depicted through its iconographic analysis is being identified to the Holy Sepulcher whose representations are assessed during the Late Byzantine period. Finally, it is being concluded that the frequency by which the tomb of Christ is depicted in art has special symbolic and other interpretations both political and religious ones which are believed to reflect the historical reality of the 12th and 13th centuries, when the dispute about the Holy Fire was in the epicenter of the conflicts between Latin and Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem.
