Icône portative de l'Evangéliste Saint Jean avec prochoros et avec des scènes de sa vie
Abstract
“Portable Vita Icon of the Evangelist St. John the Theologian from Alexandroupolis”
The new Ecclesiastical Museum of Alexandroupolis houses a portable icon which was formerly kept in the church of Saint Eleutherios in the same town. The icon depicts the Evangelist Saint John the Theologian dictating to his disciple Prochoros the fourth gospel book in front of a rocky scenic. Fourteen more miniature scenes of his vita and miracles are framing the central scene. A partly surviving dedicatory inscription at the bottom of the icon showcases that this work was a donation of a specific purpose. Notwithstanding the mediocre art of the icon, which dates in the 17th century, from an iconographic point of view this is a unique work of art of the Post-byzantine period and due to its originality an outstanding one.
