The coronation of the Virgin and other western iconographic subjects in seventeenthand eighteenth-century icons in Zakynthos
Abstract
The article discusses four unpublished icons whose subject is the Coronation of the Virgin and which can be dated from the second half of the 17th century to the early 18th century. These icons with a purely Western iconography help us to draw some conclusions with regard to the acceptance of the latter's iconography by the devotees or the dogmatically independent orientation of the local Church to the Orient. At the same time, other parameters are also broached that include the construction of the identity of the Zakynthian citizen or the flexible attitude that the Venetian state had adopted in such religious matters.
