The early Christian Basilica of St Irene at Perissa on Thera. A preliminary presentation
Abstract
The excavations undertaken by the 2nd Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities at the NE edge of the village of Perissa on Thera brought to light the ruins of a large Early Christian basilica, three-aisled, with a narthex and a semi-circular apse at its east end. An annex attached to its north had the same configuration as the basilica. Both buildings had two phases; the first is approximately dated at the beginning of the 6thand at the second at the second half of the 6th century based on the style of the sculptural decoration and on the numismatic finds from the excavation.
