Abstract

Close to the vicinity of the village of Valyra in Messenia there is a small church dedicated to the Virgin. A timber roof nowadays covers the church, which used to be vaulted. An interesting discovery about this church is the brickwork letters incorporated in its cloisonné masonry. This feature, a rather rare element, can be used as chronological evidence and date the church at the beginning of the 11th century.
