Une représentation pornographique sur un tesson d’ Argos byzantine
Abstract
A Pornographic Representation on a Sherd from Byzantine Argos
A pit filled with pottery sherds of the late 12th/early 13th century was unearthed in a rescue excavation at Argos. Among the findings there was a glazed plate sherd with incised decoration. The surviving part of the decoration represents the head of a female figure in profile, whereas on the top of the head there is an inscription. The inscription with a mocking and pornographic content, as it can be inferred, suggests the existence of erotic scenes in Byzantine pottery, an aspect of the everyday life of Byzantium, which is known on a piecemeal basis.
