Abstract

The Byzantine lead seals are a very attractive and multidimensional category of research since they are pertinent to the prosopography, the administrative organization of Byzantium, the career progression of secular and ecclesiastical officials, the history of a town or region and finally to the religious iconography. In a concise discussion, which is both historical and iconographic, the lead seals presented are being classified into three major groups, the imperial, the ecclesiastical and the aristocratic ones. Each seal can reveal interesting information for its owner and for the worldview of the Byzantine society in general.
