Numismatic treasures from medieval Thebes
Abstract
The past years in excavations outside Kadmeia at Thebes at least 15 numismatic hoards have been brought to light, the content of which includes mostly copper folles. Their preliminary study here reveals some interesting information about the historical course of Thebes and its social, commercial and economic life from the 10th to approximately the mid 12th century. Furthermore, the comparative material from the neighbouring regions adds insights pertinent to the numismatic circulation and its distribution in southern Greece during the Middle Byzantine period.
