Unpublished byzantine lead seals in the Byzantine Museum, Athens
Abstract
In this article are discussed eleven unpublished lead seals that constitute part of the Byzantine and Christian Museum's collection. The earliest of the seals dates in the 7th century and the latest one reaches the first quarter of the 14th century. From this group two of the earliest ones, which belong to state officials, have not preserved the names of their owner, whereas in the majority of the lead seals under discussion the exact opposite happens; the name has been preserved, but not the attributes. Of the most interesting ones, a seal belonged to the church officials of Hagia Sophia, two were the property of a certain John Atzimes, an unattested aristocrat from elsewhere, and two more belonged to the emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1328).
