Abstract

The only signed artwork that has survived in Kythera is the icon with the Christ Pantokrator by Emmanuel Lampardos. The Cretan origin of the icon and its function as despotic one can easily be inferred by its style and exceptional size. The analysis of style and iconography along with references to works attributed to the workshop of Lampardos lead to observations pertinent to the artistic character of the Cretan painters of the 17th century and workshop practices during the same period.
