Abstract

The article deals with the depiction of the Sacrifice of Isaac in connection with Early Christian, Late Antique Jewish and Byzantine art. First, the juxtaposition of Moses and Abraham on Early Christian sarcophagi is explained. Second, it is assumed that the Sacrifice of Isaac on the floor mosaic of the synagogue of Beth Alpha is probably influenced by Christian art. And third, the raison d’être of the Sacrifice in the prothesis is explained by the rite of the proskomide (=preparation).
