Abstract

This paper studies the apparition and the establishment of the fresco-painted masonry altar screens in the Cretan churches of the 14th-15th century. It includes new material evidence from archaeological field surveys mainly from Western Crete, and does not constitute a complete catalogue. Our main goal is to interpret this material as part of a wider transformation of the cultic forms, emphasizing mainly on their importance as indicators of Orthodox purity within the single-aisled churches of Crete, during the period of the early-Venetian occupation.
