Adults referring to past autobiographical (personal) events is critical for children’s memory and narrative development. Personal narratives are deemed to be most valid type of assessment when it comes to young children’s improvement in narrative speech. With this in mind, the purpose of the present study was to enhance personal narrative skills in low-income preschoolers. The sample consisted of 19 children attending a rural kindergarten in Crete, Greece. All the children in the sample came from a low social and economic background. The programme for improving preschool children's narrative skills was implemented individually and consisted of the following stages: a) Presenting a family photo and cards with structural elements, b) Asking the child questions about the family scene based on the cards: who, where, what, how, c) Teachers modelling the whole narrative, d) Following the teacher’s pattern, children narrate the whole story.  At the end of the programme, the children were able to freely narrate in front of the class complete personal stories with all the structural elements clearly evident. In addition, photographs with familiar scenes, seemed to resolve the elicitation task difficulties, especially for young children and/or for children with low literacy backgrounds.
