Περίληψη
Η έρευνα έχει δείξει ότι το παιχνίδι αποτελεί ένα προνομιακό περιβάλλον για να μελετήσουμε το εύρος της καθημερινής μαθηματικής γνώσης των παιδιών, καθώς σε αυτό  το πλαίσιο φέρνουν και επεξεργάζονται ποικίλες εμπειρίες, γνώσεις και δεξιότητες που αποκτούν συμμετέχοντας σε ποικίλες καθημερινές δραστηριότητες μαζί με άλλους. Επιπλέον, σχετικά πρόσφατα παρατηρείται και ένα αυξανόμενο ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον για την άμεση αξιοποίηση αυτής της οικογενειακής και πολιτισμικής εμπειρίας και γνώσης για περεταίρω μαθηματική μάθηση με την ‘μαθηματικοποίηση’ των στοιχείων του παιχνιδιού. Για τη εφαρμογή αυτής της παιδαγωγικής προοπτικής φαίνεται να έχει σημασία ένα ιδιαίτερο είδος αυθόρμητης ενασχόλησης των παιδιών με μαθηματικές ιδέες που ορισμένοι το ονομάζουν ‘μαθηματικό παιχνίδι’, ζήτημα που όμως δεν έχει μελετηθεί συστηματικά. Το παρόν άρθρο εστιάζει στην εμφάνιση και τα χαρακτηριστικά περιστατικών ‘μαθηματικού παιχνιδιού’, που εντοπίστηκαν σε μια πρόσφατη έρευνα που επεδίωξε τη διερεύνηση των χαρακτηριστικών της καθημερινής μαθηματικής σκέψης και γνώσης των παιδιών ενός δημοσίου νηπιαγωγείου, όπως αυτή εκδηλώθηκε για ενάμιση μήνα κατά το ελεύθερο παιχνίδι τους. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι τα παιδιά αυτής της τάξης αρκετά συχνά εκδήλωναν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για διάφορα μαθηματικά αντικείμενα. ‘Παίζοντας’ με αυτά και αλληλοεπιδρώντας με τους φίλους τους επεξεργάζονταν και επέκτειναν τις μαθηματικές τους γνώσεις, ενώ η εκδήλωση αυτών των περιστατικών φάνηκε να συνδέεται με συγκεκριμένες δραστηριότητες παιχνιδιού οι οποίες περιλάμβαναν κυρίως θέματα από την καθημερινή ζωή. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτά συζητούνται στη βάση των προεκτάσεων που απορρέουν για την καθημερινή πρακτική στην τάξη του νηπιαγωγείου, αλλά και για περαιτέρω έρευνα.
