Environmnetal Education and Special Education practices of the Environmental Education Centers in Greece
Abstract
The many benefits associated with students’ with special educational needs participation in Environmental Education (EE) programs recorded from various studies, make their participation in EE important. In Greece, an important institution for the implementation of Environmental Education (ΕΕ) are the 53 Environmental Education Centers (EEC) that design and implement educational programs for school students. The goal of this quantitative study was to record the practices of 53 EEC regarding the participation of students of special educational needs and disabilities in their programs. This quantitative study was conducted during the first lockdown due to corona virus pandemic with an online questionnaire of 30 questions addressing each Center’s Director. Questions demographic data of the Centers, the profile of the students who visit the EEC, the preparation of the EEC before students’ arrival, the accessibility of the Center’s infrastructure as well as questions related to perceptions of the Directors on inclusion of such students in the EE programs. Thirty four Centers responded (response rate 64% . Our results showed that many Centers make efforts in this area, while others, although recognizing this importance, need further action and state support in order to primarily improve their infrastructure. Lack of accessible spaces was highlighted as a main obstacle to the provision of EE programs by the Environmental Education Centers.
